Denny Sue Fossett, a beloved resident of Austin, Texas, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024, at the age of 87. Born November 3, 1936, in Kinder, Louisiana, she spent her formative years there with her three sisters and parents. After graduating from Kinder High School in 1955, she embarked on a life filled with love, service, and faith.
Denny wore many hats throughout her life. She was a dedicated homemaker and also worked outside the home, serving as a part-time cafeteria manager at a private Christian school in Pasadena, TX. However, her most cherished role was that of a full-time loving caregiver to her grandchildren and the neighborhood kids.
Her faith was central to her existence. Actively involved in Glad Tidings kitchen service, she was passionate about sharing the message of Jesus Christ. As a founding member of the Isaiah 61 group, she also hosted GT Glad Care groups at her home, creating a warm and welcoming space for fellow believers.
Denny was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer David Smith, and Mildred Aldyth Reynolds Smith, as well as her sister, Peggy Pitre. Her legacy lives on through her surviving family: her husband, Donald R. Fossett, and their children—Paula (Jerry) Coddington, Patty Jackson, Mary (Gary) Graham, Donna (Chuck) Mechell, and Warren Fossett (Heidi). She was also blessed with eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Her sisters, Jan Augustine and Dickie Savant.
A quirky detail about Denny was her unwavering love for hamburgers. No matter the meal, her answer to the question of what she wanted to eat was always “hamburger.” Her passion extended beyond food; she was equally devoted to winning souls for Christ. In fact, she once led a lady to faith while waiting in line at a restaurant—a testament to her unwavering commitment.
Denny’s life was marked by sacrifice. She raised five children while her husband, Don, served on two war deployments. Her strength and resilience were evident as she navigated the challenges of military life, supporting her family and maintaining her unwavering faith.
Denny and her husband would have celebrated 67 years of marriage on June 8. Their enduring love story began with seven years of courtship before marriage in 1957. Together, they enjoyed countless travels and shared a deep patriotism, especially in their support for our country and its veterans—fitting, as Denny was a military wife herself.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Suncrest Hospice for their compassionate care during Denny’s final days. To honor her memory, family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at The Church of Glad Tidings (2700 Northland Dr., Austin, TX 78756) on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 2:00 pm. A reception will take place immediately following the service.
