Don spent his youth in Llano, TX where his dad Don, Sr. ran the local drug store. In high school he was active in FFA, plays, student council and the honor society. He was a member of the basketball team for four years and his 1955 team is in the Llano athletics Hall of Fame.
Following high school Don attended the University of Texas at Austin where he obtained his undergraduate degree in ceramic engineering. Don met his wife Jeannine in Michigan where they both worked at GMAC in Flint. As a ceramic engineer Don and Jeannine lived in Michigan (where Don's first daughter, Tina was born), California, Ohio (where his second daughter Dona was born), and a number of cities in Texas.
In his mid-thirties, Don switched careers and became a certified public accountant. Don, along with friend Jim Huckaby, founded the Bruhl and Huckaby accounting firm. After many years they sold the business to Freemon, Shapard, and Story, and Don joined FSS to run their new Marble Falls office, where he worked until his retirement in 2010.
Don's greatest passion was golf. He could be found on the course every week of the year. He often bragged to Michigan relatives at Christmas time how he had just gotten off the golf course. During his golfing "career" Don carded multiple holes in one. Don liked to laugh and enjoyed all aspects of a good joke—telling, hearing and even being the butt of one.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and wife Jeannine. Don is survived by his brother Dennis of Somerville, daughter Tina Timmerman and husband Craig of Austin, and daughter Dona Loethen and husband Bruce of Leander.
Memorial service will be Saturday June 9, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 North Lamar in Austin.
