Doris H. Breed age 88 of Austin, TX entered the gates of Heaven to be with our Lord on Sunday, April 11, 2021 surrounded by the love of her three sons and devoted family. She was born March 14, 1933 in New Rochelle, NY (just outside of NYC) to John and Eva Seiler. She was the oldest of two children.
At a USO Navy dance in New Rochelle she was swept off her feet by a country boy, Bill T. Breed, from Dipping Springs, TX. They said their “I Do’s” on November 28, 1954 and were happily married for 62 years. With the Texas Hill Country calling Bill back home, the city girl from NY reluctantly agreed to the move. The couple and their first child, Bill, moved to Lake Charles, LA and then to Beaumont, TX. Finally, after having two more children, John and Carl, in Beaumont they moved to Austin, TX where they laid down permanent roots to raise their family. Although it took a little time, once Doris got accustomed to Southern living and met life-long friends, she began to embrace the traditions and ultimately called Texas her home.
Being a daughter of German immigrants there wasn’t much this tough German-New Yorker couldn’t handle. She cherished her German heritage and the role it played in her life. She would often practice speaking German with anyone who could participate; mainly her mother, sister Laura and nephew John David. A good German meal and travel to the family’s homeland in Bavaria, Germany were some ways she was able to stay connected with her deep-seeded roots. Equally important were her strong ties to New York. Regular trips back to the Empire State would usually do the trick in curing any homesickness. Doris treasured visits to NYC, Long Island, Hudson Park and Upstate New York, including West Hurley, Woodstock, Catskill Mountains, Peekamoose, Overlook Mountain and Hunter Mountain. No trip would be complete without spending quality time with her family and friends from the Northeast.
Doris had a love for kids of all ages and that was evident in her career path when she entered the workplace. Whether she was helping college students at The University of Texas Financial Aid Office or high school students at McCallum H.S. she did it with all her heart, genuinely trying to get to know those she came in contact with. This is exactly how she engaged with friends of her three boys. If you were a friend of her children, you were a friend of Doris.
Doris loved to travel and being with her loyal friends; especially if that meant finding TX/OU tickets for everyone and then going to the game or spending time in Port Aransas, TX. She looked forward to regular meetings with her Lunch Bunch friends, Red Hat Society, Bunko group and friends in her neighborhood Book Club. She was direct, outgoing, loyal, committed and naturally curious, which often led to rapid-fire questions to her sons and their friends. She just had to know! But Doris’s greatest passion of all was spending as much time as possible with her family and demonstrating so much love to her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Traits she has passed on to her entire family.
On behalf of the Breed family, a special thank you to the staff at Brookdale Northwest Hills and Hospice for the kindness and loving care given to our mother.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 2016 and her sister Laura in 2001. She is survived by her three children and their wives, Bill & Cynthia Breed of Austin, TX, John & Anna Breed of Austin, TX, and Carl & Kim Breed of Brenham, TX, along with her seven grandchildren, Bianca, Danielle, Luke, Steven, James, Kristin and Zac, as well as her two great-grandchildren Kolton and Kason.

Lamar Blvd. Austin, TX 78705. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, April 16 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church located at 5455 Bee Caves Rd. Austin, TX 78746. Following the service Doris will be buried at Phillips Cemetery in Dripping Springs, TX. Refreshments and fellowship will follow afterwards.
