

Doris Lou Harris passed away peacefully on March 23, 2010, at age 84. She was born April 7, 1925 to W.L. (Cowboy) and Ruth Paris Hendricks in San Saba County, Texas, and they resided there until she moved with the family to Elgin,Texas in 1942. After graduation from Elgin High School, she worked at Camp Swift during World War II, and was also a waitress at the City Café. At the end of the war, she worked at the Adjutant General Department, at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. While employed there she met and married the love of her life, James T. Harris. She was married to Colonel Harris for almost 63 years. They lived primarily in Austin Texas, and during this time, she was a dedicated wife, mother, and wonderful homemaker. In later years she was employed by Texas Highway Department until her retirement. Doris and her husband have been members of Crestview United Methodist Church in Austin for many years. She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Hilla and Buddy Hendricks, and her nephew John Polk Hendricks of Elgin. Survivors include her husband Colonel James T. Harris, Retired, daughters Greggory Ann and husband Dan Curtis, Karen Ruth and husband Daryl Polk, all of Houston, Texas. Also surviving are her granddaughter Kimberly Ann Fazzino of Austin, her sister Mary Christensen and husband Jimmie of Elgin, and two sisters-in-law, Patricia R. Hendricks of Bellville, Texas and Patricia D. Hendricks of Austin, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Doris will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Visitation will be held from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. on March 25, 2010, at Cook –Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar in Austin. Funeral services will be on Friday, March 26, 2010, at 1:00p.m., also at Cook-Walden. Burial will follow the service at the Elgin Cemetery, in Elgin, Texas.
