

Dorlas Tobin Myers, 83, passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day, May 9, 2010. Dorlas was born on March 6, 1927 in Austin, Texas. She married Royce R. Myers, Sr. on Christmas Day, 1947, and they were together for 46 years until his passing in 1993. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Royce and her beloved daughter, Lynda Myers Carter. Dorlas was born and raised in Austin and graduated from Austin High School. She was involved in numerous volunteer and service organizations throughout her life. One of her many accomplishments included serving as President of Women in Construction where she directed the construction and dedication of the Gazebo to the City of Austin. The Gazebo is still an Austin landmark on Lady Bird Lake and is visited by thousands of people annually. Dorlas was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile and the Ladies Oriental Shrine where she served as President and Recorder of both organizations. Her late husband Royce was a member of the Ben Hur Shrine and was elected to the Divan. Dorlas served along side him as The First Lady when he reached the honorable position of Potentate in 1990. Dorlas was also proud of her service to her country when she worked along side many other women at Camp Mabry during WWII assembling automotive parts for vehicles to be used by our servicemen. Also, among her many volunteer activities was her service with Meals on Wheels and Candy Stripers.
Dorlas cared for everyone around her and will be greatly missed by all. She enriched the lives of her family, her many friends, and those who helped her through her final illness. Dorlas is survived by her beloved son Royce R. Myers Jr., grandson Christopher Myers and his mother Beth Myers, son-in-law J.C. Carter, granddaughter Jill Carter, great-grandchildren Benjamin and Kylee, sister Blanche Dickerson of Pasadena, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews, and longtime childhood friends, Louise Long and Bud Stein. A special thank you to the staff at Hospice Austin, Meals on Wheels and Heartland Health Care Center for their caring staff and Regina, who through her tireless service as a volunteer has provided friendship and help during a most difficult time. Visitation will be held at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 6:00–8:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Cook-Walden Funeral Home to celebrate the life of this wonderful woman who gave so much to the community and to her family and friends. Interment services will follow at Austin Memorial Park on Hancock Drive where she will rest beside her beloved husband, Royce.
