She was born November 29, 1920 in Royal Oak, Michigan to Louise Yost Desmond and Ralph Desmond. Her family moved to Chicago, Illinois during her teen years and she graduated from Senn High School and Business College in Chicago. As a young woman she worked for several firms in the Chicago Loop area. In 1943 she married George Snyder in Phoenix, Arizona. When George was assigned to the Pacific Theater of World War II, Dorothy returned to Chicago and resumed working. Upon George’s return from Japan they moved to St. Louis and subsequently had two daughters, Louise born in 1946 and Catherine born in 1949. After 20 years in St. Louis George was transferred to Beaumont, Texas and later to Saudi Arabia where they made their homes. They retired in 1981 and made their home in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Dorothy was a very creative person and throughout her life she pursued many creative endeavors including painting, needlepoint, decoupage, macramé, knitting and crochet. Her greatest love was for sewing and she was an excellent seamstress, tailor, and quilter. Dorothy loved to be around people and if she wasn’t throwing a dinner party she was playing cards or going to lunch with a group of girlfriends. Travel was her passion and the more exotic the location the better she liked it. She was proud to say she had been to all 50 states and most of their capitols and had traveled around the world the equivalent of 3 times.
Family was everything to Dorothy and great times were spent around a holiday dinner table with much laughter and storytelling. Nothing could bring a smile to her face faster than hearing of the antics of her great grandchildren.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband George, her parents and her brother-in-law Vern Haggenjos.
She is survived by her sister Lois Haggenjos of Roseville, Illinois, daughter Louise Brown and husband Charlie of Austin, Texas, daughter Catherine King of Katy, Texas, granddaughter Lisa Childers and husband John of Austin, Texas, grandson Kevin Brown of Austin, Texas, and granddaughter Emily King of Houston, Texas, three great grandchildren, Jackson, Charlie and Annie Childers and her two dearest friends, Frances Gardenhire and Dorothy Prosser.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Lawton Salvation Army, St. Andrews Episcopal Church or a charity of your choosing.
