Doug was born on July 31, 1952, in Freeport, Texas, and was raised in Angleton, where he developed the grit, work ethic, and love for people that would define his life.
Doug proudly served as a Landman for Texaco for many years. More than his profession, however, he was known for the way he cared for those around him. He was a servant leader who never hesitated to lend a hand, encourage others, or meet practical needs. Whether arriving at a job site on the hottest Texas day with his smoker, a home-cooked meal, and ice-cold drinks for crews working on rigs or digging trenches, or simply taking time to listen, Doug led by example through humility, generosity, and compassion.
Doug was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who treasured time with his family. He shared nearly five decades of love and partnership with his beloved wife, Linda. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 26, 2026, a milestone that stands as a testament to their enduring love, commitment, and the life they built together.
He loved hunting, fishing, and golfing, but his greatest passion was sharing the love of Jesus Christ. Through his unwavering faith, he broke generational chains and left a legacy of leading his family to walk "The Way," encouraging them to commit their lives to the Lord and seek His purpose above all else. His steadfast faith, strength, and love will continue to guide generations to come.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Aileen Ables, and his brother, Don Piper.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Linda Ables; his children, Dewayne Ables, Amy Ables, and Nancy Ables Sabban; his daughter-in-law, Amber Ables; his son-in-law, Rani Sabban; his cherished grandchildren, Sam Ables, Peyton Ables, Jake Ables, Eli Ables, Madison Sabban, and Hudson Sabban; and his brothers, Joseph Ables and Jim Piper. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Three Oaks Hospice and Five Points for the compassionate care and support they provided Doug during his final days.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held on October 17, 2026, at Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, where family and friends will gather to honor his life, share memories, and celebrate the enduring legacy of his faith, love, and generosity.
Doug will be remembered as a gritty, dependable, and deeply loving man, a man who made things happen, put others before himself, and faithfully served both God and people. His life was a testament to hard work, humble leadership, and unwavering devotion to Christ. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the family he loved, the people he served, and the countless lives he pointed toward Jesus.
