Our dear, sweet, kind, beautiful, feisty daughter left us on February 14, 2021. We are bereft. Dru was so smart, so gifted, so compassionate. She was a champion of the marginalized and of outsiders. She worked hard and loved hard. Whether you knew her as Dru, Dru Anne, Druby, Druby-do, Drucilla, Drucefus, or her favorite, Dru Anney Fanny (this is the part where she is rolling her eyes), you could not ignore her or escape her love for you.
Dru had a great sense of humor and was an old soul, wise beyond her years. She was intuitive and creative. She had a soft spot for animals, whether rescuing kittens from a shelter or turtles from a parking lot during a tornado warning. In addition to animals, she loved reading, Boston, keeping Austin weird, and riding her horse Blue.
Dru was smart: she was co-editor of the Tom C. Clark High School newspaper and was a National Merit Scholar semifinalist. She graduated in three years from Boston University with a B.S. in Communication and Media Studies - Film. Dru worked for the Wayne Wright and Ogletree Deakins law firms, becoming a paralegal. But as a lifelong reader, her most favorite job ever may have been her first job out of college as a bookseller at Austin’s BookPeople.
Dru was a fighter, and she won many battles on her own terms. She was brave and true to her independent spirit. Though she fought so hard, sadly she lost her battle with alcoholism. The world was a much better place with her in it. She has left a huge empty hole in our hearts, but she knew we loved her, and we knew she loved us. This will sustain us in the days, months and years ahead. Everywhere we look, we see memories of her. As we compose this now, we are reminded how much Dru helped us; for example, she set up her mom’s new laptop (this is another part where Dru is rolling her eyes) and she suggested new podcasts, particularly true crime, to her dad.
Dru is survived by her mother Chris Fox and significant other, Robert Nino; her father Mike Fox and partner Kathy Kuryak; and her beloved cats Squirrel and Charly. She is also survived by her Aunt Linda Brown, Uncle Lonnie Fox, and Aunt Maleta Fox Reynolds and Uncle Ricky Reynolds, and numerous cousins of the Peters, Brown, Fox, and Watson families. Dru was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, PoPo and Lou Lou Fox and Grandma Adrianne Simpson, her Uncle Joe Clay Brown, her Aunt Pat Simpson, and her Aunt Tracey Fox as well as by Fenway, Otis, Karma, and Blue.
There will be a private family ceremony to celebrate Dru's life when we can all get together safely. For those wishing to honor Dru’s life she would no doubt have suggested contributions to Planned Parenthood, any animal rescue organization, or a charity of your choice.
Dru is forever in our hearts. There will never be another like her.
Good night Honey #1.
