
Hey Grandpa,  We miss you so much.I am realy going to miss your grandpa dives,playing catch phrase,scaring you in the Maryland City bush and watching you work at getting a rise out of Tani,Laney and nanny. i had a feeling as i watched you take your last breath that you were already watching over the bed of what was happening. i also know Kyle was there. we will think of you every day and smile for you every day. Today is my chance to say thank you dad for the way you brightened my life. I feel cheated that you were taken from me and yet I must learn to be grateful that you were my father. Only now that you are gone do I truly appreciate what am now without, and I want you to know that life without you it is very, very difficult.   My despaired over your loss is great. I do not believe that for all the pain I am going thru right now, would I trade it for the precious moments, memories and experiences that I shared with you when you were living. My grandpa will truly be missed by all who have ever known him-or even met him.  My memories of him remind me that, although he may have been physically sick for a while-he was spiritualy thriving and as alive as could be-even on his deathbed.  I thank God that I can owe my very existence to such an intriguing  man that wasn't afraid to live- A man that wrestled fiercly with the reaper for so long and hard ...A man that loved his family and his friends so much that he didn't mind "wrestling the reaper" if it could buy him some more time with his loved ones...A man that met Jesus on his deathbed...A man that I know with all my heart I'll see again someday when I myself come home.      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~    Grandpa, despite my sadness that you're gone, my soul becomes filled with joy and contentment to know that you are in no more pain, you are home, you are in Christ's good hands now. It is with great sadness that I write this to my Friend for almost 50 years. You fought a long and brave battle, but the Lord has other plans for you now. Rest in please old friend and warrior. Here is a little quote from Kahlil that a friend of mine sent me after Kyle died.  "The deeper that sorrow carves into your being,the more joy you can contain. When your are joyous,look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.    When you are sorrowful look again in your heart and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight."

I'm glad I was notified of Mr. Buethe's passing, and terribly sorry to hear of it.    I met him as young teenager in Maryland while hanging out every day with his son, Mike.  I'm now 46 but have indelible memories of Mr. Buethe.      I hadn't seen him since the 1980s, but based on my years around him, I'm confident that he sucked the marrow out of life.  He not only served his country but had a beautiful and cool wife.  He also sired offspring better than Seattle Slew.  His boys had just the right amount of respect and trouble-maker in them, and were top athletes, to boot.   His daughters are all down-to-earth and gorgeous.  Whatever Mike and I would talk to him about he had a perspective that hit a young boy right between the eyes.  Heck, I pretty much joined the US Air Force because of him.      I hadn't seen Mr Buethe in 30 years but quoted him just last week.  Once, in the late 70s, when the speedometer needle was broken in their big, midnight blue Lincoln, one of his kids was griping to have it fixed as they "couldn't drive without it," and Mr Buethe responded:  "What? You gotta be kidding me!!  If you can't drive with the flow of traffic, you don't belong on the road."   ... I never heard another word about that needle.  And I swear, I quoted that line just the other day --- and will never forget where it came.      The Buethe's of the 1970s always celebrated well --- the best --- and "big Duane" was always the life of the party.  In the family's Maryland days, legal drinking age was 18 ... which meant boys tried to buy beer around 16.  Late one night at a Buethe house party, Mike and I, no more than 16-17, had been knocking-back some cans out-of-sight, in the basement.  It was loud, people galore -- everybody living it up.  Out of nowhere, like on a magic carpet ride, someone rode down the flight of steps on a piece of cardboard.  Next thing you knew, many were doing it.  Mr Buethe looked over the railing to the basement and said, "That's for sissies.  Gimme that damned thing," and he went down... head first!  I was at the bottom.  I'm telling you:  hit his forehead so hard on the cement that I thought it was time for 911.  And he just laid there --- dead still, maybe a little blood, apparently knocked out.  But after riding it out dramatic effect, he rolled over, smiled, lifted his plastic cup and said, "Top me off.  Let's do that again."    ... Ah!  It was one of the funniest things I ever saw in my life.      I could go on for 10 more minutes, but let me just say on a serious note that this was a man of high integrity.  How many people can you look back on and say they helped develop your character as person?  'Old man' Buethe did that for me, and I'll remember him til the day they put me in the ground.      In more ways than one, big Duane Buethe left his mark on earth, and who couldn't ask for that?    May God bless him and his family.  I hope to see all you Buethe's again some time soon. I knew Duane the last year and a half of his life. He always greeted me with a big smile, was very kind to me and made me feel like I was part of his family. I shall miss my buddy.
