Earl served his country in the United States Air Force between 1955-1965 and then in the United States Army between 1965-1975. Staff Sargent Hammonds was stationed in Vietnam from April 1969 to February 1970. He led the 6th Battalion 33rd Artillery Group as a gun chief until the unit left Vietnam having been awarded a Bronze Star, Silver Star and Army Commendation Medal. He retired in 1975 at the age of 38 as a Recruiter in Seguin, Texas. Serving with extraordinary soldiers was his absolute honor.
In 1976 after retirement from the Military, Earl went back to college attending South West Texas State University achieving a degree in Business with Honors. Earl continued to serve his community through the Sheriff’s department in Austin, Texas and retiring as a Travis County probation officer.
Earl (21) met the love of his life, Maria del Carmen Bentue Gomez (17), during a United Service Organization (USO) dance in Zaragoza, Spain in 1958 and they married a year later in Gibraltar, United Kingdom. They would have celebrated 63 years of marriage on May 05, 2022 spending the best years of their lives with their children, Eloisa, Sandra and Kenneth in Seguin, Texas.
Earl and Maria Carmen lived in many places however Seguin was the most special. It is the place they called “home” where so many friends to this date are still considered family. Earl developed a love for golf and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boxing, and Maria Carmen’s home cooked meals.
Earl’s brother Don Hammonds precedes Earl in death along with his parent’s Iva Lee and Earl Hammonds.
Earl is survived by his loving wife Maria Carmen Hammonds, son Kenneth Hammonds Jr., daughter in law Gloria Hammonds and seven beloved grandchildren and a host of friends. Any moment with his grandchildren was time well spent.
We would like to especially thank Dr. Jeffrey Cox, Nurse Sally Hernandez and Physical Therapists Warren McAdams and Mary Barron who brightened Earl’s days never giving up on him. Dr. Juan Garcia-Perez, Santiago Garcia, Charles Worry and Jim Osborne were his favorite golfing partners. He also enjoyed his four legged and furry friends, Sandy, Charlie and the last of which is Raleigh.
