After completing residency in General Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Dr. Howard established a surgical practice in Austin in 1976. For over 35 years, he dedicated his life to the care of his patients. He was revered by his patients and respected by his colleagues. His kindness, patience, humor, and wisdom were truly a gift to us all. Dr. Howard is survived by Jo Sue, his wife of 40 years, his daughter, Josie Howard, MD, of San Francisco, mother, Evelyn Howard, and sister, Holly Tyson, both of Fort Worth, and sister, Julianna Howard, of San Antonio. His father, Earl W. Howard Jr. preceded him in death. The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to his caregiver and friend, Carolyn Kelly, for bringing joy and hope to the final years of his life, and to his physicians, Drs. David Morledge, Frank Robinson, and John Doty for their expert care. The family also extends its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Howards longtime medical assistant and devoted friend, Doris Prescott, and to Geronimo Briones for his many years of dedication. Dr. Howard was an avid runner and a regular fixture at the Hike and Bike Trail. Memorial contributions may be made in his name for the dedication of a bench on the Lady Bird Lake Trail. (The city requests that checks be made payable to the City of Austin and sent to the family.) Alternatively, donations may be made to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in his memory at www.curepsp.org. Private family services will be held at a later date.
