

Earl M. Scott, Lt. Col. U.S. Army, Retired, passed away on December 5, 2007 in Austin, TX at the age of 90. He was born to James Brack Scott and Osha Viola Morrow Scott in Coryell County, TX on July 5, 1917. Austin has been his home for over 50 years. Earl is survived by his loving wife, Mary, of 46 years, and by his children, Laurie McBride and husband Butch, Kathy George and husband J.W., Beth Coffey, and Jim Brice. Earl adored his five grandchildren, Joshua and Taylor McBride, Christopher and David George and Brandon Coffey and wife Michelle. He is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Nite of Killeen, TX and Sara Smith of San Antonio, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Emma Parks, Mary Young, Holmes Scott, James Scott, Adrian Scott, Wesley Scott, and Ruth Botkin. Earl graduated from Gatesville High School and attended John Tarleton College. In August of 1951, he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from UT School of Law. Earl began his career as a public servant at the Texas Board for State Hospitals and Special Schools. In 1964, he became Chief of Legal and Claims Division for Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. At retirement, as Asst. Commissioner of TDMHMR, he was serving as Acting Commissioner, as he had several times during his career. After retirement, Earl served as Interim Executive Director of the Texas Counsel of Community MHMR Centers. Earl was a member and former President of the North Austin Civitan Club and a former member and Board Member of the Texas Public Employees Association and the Texas Retired Employees Association. He was a member of the State Bar of Texas for over 50 years. Earl loved our Lord and was a faithful member of Tarrytown Baptist Church for more than 30 years. With Mary, he served his community by delivering meals on wheels. Earl loved to golf and refurbish furniture that Mary picked up at garage sales. He enjoyed watching football with his sons-in-law go Cowboys! Thank you to the staff at Christopher House for helping ease Earls transition into heaven and for being so supportive and caring to us. We would also like to thank the many nurses and doctors at Seton Hospital who have cared for him so many times over the past years. Our thanks also go to Anita and Valerie at the Bull Creek care home and to the 2nd floor staff at The Summitt. Visitation will be Saturday, December 8th from 5p.m.-7p.m. and funeral services will be at 2:00pm on Sunday, December 9th, both at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar.
