

Edgar F Jones III, MD left us peacefully on May 10, 2026. . He was born in Galveston, Texas on April 17, 1936. Edgar was a 1954 graduate of Ball High School, a 1959 graduate of the University of Texas, and a lifelong fan of the Texas Longhorns. He was a 1964 graduate of The University of Texas Medical Branch and completed a general practice residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He joined his father, Dr Edgar F (Jack) Jones Jr. in the general practice of medicine in 1966. He served in the medical corps of the Texas National Guard and was a Major in the Army Reserves. He was a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, as well as a Fellow of the American Institute for Healthcare Quality. He served Galveston and Galveston County as the 1966 Chair of the Galveston Public Health Committee, working diligently to facilitate its merger with the Galveston County Health Department. He received the City of Galveston Board of Health Distinguished Service Award in 1971. He was president of the Galveston chapter of Rotary International. Like his father before him, he served as Chief of the Medical Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital and was an active member of the Texas Medical Association and the Galveston County Medical Society. He was the team doctor for the Ball High School Tornados for 22 years. In 1998 he joined the faculty of the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston (UTMB). Teaching medical students and Family Practice residents the art of medicine was one of the great joys of his life. Before moving to Austin in 2008, he was an involved and active member of Moody Memorial Methodist Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years Rhoda Hunt Jones, daughter Stacy Jones MD and husband David Nix, son Edgar F (Jack) Jones, IV and wife Cynde Barnett Jones, son David W Jones and wife Lee Patton Jones, son William H Jones and wife Leah Goss Jones, brother Kenneth J. Jones MD and wife Cathy, brother Gary R Jones MD and wife Phyllis, 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
