Edith Marie Crawford, 90, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, September 24, 2018 with her husband Roy by her side. She was born in Granger, TX on September 3, 1928 to Joe F. and Hermina Mokry. She was the second oldest sibling of 10 and the 6th of her siblings to pass. She moved to Austin in 1940 with her family and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1947. She then started working for the State Comptroller’s Office later that year. She resigned in June 1955 as she prepared for the birth of her son, Keith, and full time motherhood. Once Keith started school in the early 1960s, she worked on a part time basis at the Adjutant General’s Credit Union on the grounds of Camp Mabry until the late 1970s. Edith was a long term member of the KJZT Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas.
Edith met her future husband on a blind date set up by her sister Helen in the summer of 1952 in Austin. They were married 2 years later on August 7, 1954 at St. Austin’s Catholic Church and recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Their only child Keith was born on August 8, 1955 and moved back to Austin in 2016 after spending 37 years in Houston.
In 1987 Roy convinced Edith that they needed to find a hobby to take up some of their free time, so in April 1987 they joined the Georgetown Country Club to undertake the game of golf. During the summer of 1987 they were invited to join up with nine other couples at the Club to form a special golfing group called “The Odd Couples”. During the 31 years as members of this special group Edith always had a great time at the monthly tournaments and especially the annual trips to Ruidoso, NM and other locations in and out of Texas. She and Roy enjoyed their time with the group and met and made many friends along the way. Edith was also a member of the Georgetown Country Club Women’s Golf Association during this same time.
Edith was preceded in death by her mother Hermina and her father Joe F. Mokry; her brothers Dan, Bob, Joe P. and Albert Mokry, and sister Helen Mokry.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years Roy and son Keith both of Austin; sister Mildred Trank and husband Frank of Austin; sister Loretta Ciora and husband Ron of McKinney, TX; brother Roman Mokry and wife Donna of Austin; brother Clarence Mokry of Georgetown, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from CareSearch and Home Instead, and the staff at Hospice Austin for the help and support during Edith’s last weeks.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with Recitation of Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 28, 2018 at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church at 7601 Burnet Road, with interment to immediately follow at Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Edith’s name to Hospice Austin.
