Edna Groeschel left our world for a bigger world on May 13, 2021. She was born August 21, 1927 to Robert and Irmgard Wegner Kramer near Brenham, Texas. She was preceeded into God’s Kingdom by her parents Robert and Irmgard, husband Ludwig, son-In-Law Timothy Hartzog, Sr., and granddaughter-in-law Sandy Hartzog.
She is survived by her daughters Lois Hartzog and Sandy Schuch; son-In-law Don Schuch; grandchildren Navy Chief (Retired) Timothy King Hartzog, Jr. of Aiea, Hawaii, Terry Hartzog and wife Ashley, Zac Schuch and wife Caitlin, and Dr. Dylan Schuch; great-grandchildren Sawyer and Barrett Schuch, as well as Tyler, Daniel, Abigail, and Mason Hartzog. She was anticipating the birth of great-granddaughter Gracelynn Schuch this year.
She was baptized October 16, 1927, confirmed September 21, 1941, and married the love of her life on June 8, 1947 – all at Zion Lutheran Church near Brenham.
She served the people of the Great Republic of Texas for 33 years, retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety in May of 1987.
Edna enjoyed time with her family, sewing, reading, dancing, and travelling. She traced her family genealogy back to Germany, and visited there many times with her beloved Ludwig.
Her confirmation verse marked her character throughout her life. Psalms 111, v. 10 reads, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom; a good understanding have all them that do His commandments. His grace endureth forever.”
The family wishes to thank Southern Hospitality Home for caring for Edna so diligently for the last couple months of her life. We also wish to thank the staff, nurses and doctors at Dell Seton Medical Center at U.T. Although there is not space to mention you all, know that we remember each of you and your kindness. You all hold a special place in our hearts for the care you gave Edna.
Edna rode a horse for miles each day to attend school. She and Ludwig ordered a Sears and Roebucks house after they married upon Ludwig’s return from the Great War. In that house they raised their daughters, and built a life entertaining family and friends. The house they bought was forged into a home through their love for each other, for their daughters, and their community.
Edna so loved Ludwig that she kept a log of their last memories. The last time they danced was on November 28, 1998 at the wedding anniversary of dear friends. The last night Ludwig slept in their bed was on February 8, 1999. The last time he put his arm around her was on February 19, 1999. She noted he was too weak to talk that night.
We are sure that when Mom walked through Saint Peter’s gates today, Dad wrapped his arm around her again, and they are dancing their way across the great ballroom of Heaven tonight.
Services will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2021, with Visitation at 10:00 am and Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 am at Cook-Walden North Lamar Funeral Home. Interment to immediately follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Ascension Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas or Paloma Hospice And Palliative Care in San Antonio, Texas.
