Beloved wife, mother, and friend, Elaine Kincaid Slaughter, passed away December 16 at the age of 92. Survived by Col. (ret.) Clarence Benton Slaughter Jr., daughters Suzanne Slaughter and Nancy Slaughter and son-in-law Gary Bowers, Elaine's reflection on her life was that it was perfect and she wanted to do it all over again. Married almost sixty-six years, Elaine called Ben her Rock.
Born in Dewey, Oklahoma on May 16, 1920 to local pharmacist Duane Lewis Kincaid and his wife Grace Schlagle Kincaid, Elaine moved to Austin in 1929. She was a graduate of Austin High School, class of 1938. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin's Plan II program, Elaine began her journalism career in 1942. She later worked for radio stations in Dallas and Austin until her life took a turn for the better and she met and married Air Force pilot Ben Slaughter.
Elaine loved everything about military life. Close ties with Ben's co-workers, their families, and the girls' schools extended beyond hospitality to volunteerism. Elaine managed thrift shops, Red Cross Blood Mobiles, Military Officers' Wives Club activities, and participated in numerous cultural and civic duties attached to over a dozen military assignments in Europe, Asia, and across the U.S. She was particularly proud of the work she did to expand Girl Scouts International, Far East during the early 1960s.
Since returning to Austin in the early 1970s, the family continued the tradition of welcoming friends into their home. Until the last few years, bridge luncheons and the annual Christmas party were set routines. Last December Elaine became ill. The profound abiding love Elaine shared with Ben and their cherished daughters and her declaration of a life well lived are comforting reminders.
The family wishes to thank Heart to Heart Hospice and the staff at the Emeritus Skilled Nursing Center for their compassionate care the past year. They have eased the journey with loving concern.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 22nd at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759.
