

Elizabeth (Betty) Beyer Baker Hoffman, 92, long time resident of Austin, Texas died May 3, 2008. Elizabeth was born in Toledo Ohio on Oct. 20, 1915 to parents Dr. George Beyer, physician, and Lettie Young. After graduating from Waite High School in 1933, Elizabeth attended Dennison University for two years, and Ohio Wesleyan University for two more years where she was a secondary education major with minors in math, history, and zoology. It was at Ohio Wesleyan where she met her future husband, Roger Crane Baker of Delaware, Ohio. She went to UCLA as a teaching assistant in zoology while working toward a master's degree. Roger and Betty were married Sept. 3, 1938 in Toledo Ohio. Roger Baker had a career as a groundwater geologist with the United States Geological Service. Through his work, they lived in Trenton, New Jersey, Fayettville, Ark., and Little Rock, Ark. Austin, Texas then became their home for more for more than 50 years. Roger passed away on June 29, 1988. Throughout her life Elizabeth was a homemaker, and kept in close touch with her college friends and many others. She painted and had a great interest in art. She generously donated to many charity organizations, and was actively involved with her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. She served as a docent at Laguna Gloria Museum. She especially enjoyed swimming throughout her life until her final years. Elizabeth was closely involved with her church, St. John's United Methodist Church, which she and Roger attended together for over 30 years. After Roger's death, she married a fellow church member, Tennis (Tom) Hoffman in 1991, after the death of his wife Jeanette. Together Tom and Elizabeth remained a close and loving couple even during their final few years together in assisted living at Brighton Gardens, until Tom Hoffman's recent death on Feb. 25, 2008. Betty is survived by son Roger C. Baker Jr. of Austin Tx., daughter Susan Elizabeth Morrall (Steve) of Barre Mass, and grandchildren Ashley Elizabeth Morrall and Alexander Baker Morrall of Mass. She also leaves her brother, George Beyer, Jr., Beltsville, Maryland and several nieces, sister-in-law Margaret Baker Flint of Columbus Ohio. She is also survived by Tom's children Lawrence Hoffman (Cheryl) of Calif., John Hoffman (Gail) of Michigan, and Mary Ellen Stokes (Dan) of North Carolina, and their children and grand children. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Services and interment will be at 1:45 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
