Elsie Tina Mae Nunley Humphreys has peacefully passed away in her home, at the age of 97. She was born on December 14, 1918 in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma to Joseph Nunley and Aegle Neyman. She was the third child out of seven children. In 1923, when Elsie was five years old, her family moved to San Antonio, Texas. It was there that she met the love of her life, William "Bill" Humphreys. She was thirteen years old at the time. He was the brother of her best friend, Agnes. Once Bill set eyes on Elsie there was no going back. He stole her shoes so she couldn't go home and then he tried to kiss her. She acted affronted, but became enamored of the man she thought of as "the most handsome man she had ever seen". They married five years later when Elsie was only eighteen years old. Their relationship had its ups and downs, but altogether it lasted over a span of seventy years. No story of Elsie can be told without the incredible love she had for her husband, Bill. She was there at his bedside when he passed away in 2001.
Elsie and Bill moved to Corpus Christie as newlyweds, and after a few moves they eventually came to call Austin, Texas home. It was 1957, and by then they had two young sons. The home they bought together became the only home they lived in for the rest of their lives. Elsie had a career for twenty years at Lumberman's Investment Corporation, where she retired in 1977, but her main career was as a dedicated wife and mother. The most devastating time in Elsie's life was when she lost her son, Joe, in a motorcycle accident. It was 1968, and Joe was only nineteen years old. Despite her incredible loss, Elsie managed to keep a sense of humor and family connection. She was a caregiver to several of her family members for many years, and was always someone you could turn to for help.
Elsie was an unpretentious woman with simple ways and tastes. She made most of her own clothing and canned her own vegetables. At Christmas, friends and neighbors could look forward to shelled pecans from their trees and homemade candy. She and Bill made their famous homemade ice cream every summer.
Although sitting in their yard was one of their favorite past times, Elsie really looked forward to a yearly September road trip with her husband. They covered most of the United States over the years, and especially enjoyed the national parks.
She is proceeded in death by her parents; her son, Joe,; her husband, William; her best friends, and all of her siblings and their spouses.
Elsie is survived by her son, Mike and his wife Leona (Lee) of Austin, Texas; her grandson, Christopher and his wife Sandy of Shreveport, Louisiana; granddaughter, Rachael of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughter, Victoria of Austin, Texas; grandson, Grant of Austin, Texas; and great-grandsons, William and Jacob of Shreveport, Louisiana.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Faith Presbyterian Church.
