

Elva Schumacher Gebhard A resident of Austin for over thirty years, Elva Schumacher Gebhard died Monday, May 17, as a result of complications of a stroke suffered April 5, 2004. She was born October 7, 1908 to Rudolph Emil Schumacher and Clara Twieg Schumacher in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Rudolph Schumacher was comptroller of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, President of the Uihlein Chocolate Company, and manager of the Uihlein family interests with offices in Milwaukee and New York City. She graduated in 1925 from Milwaukee Downer Seminary now the University School of Milwaukee and in 1929 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Economics. In 1930, she married Dr. Urban E. Gebhard, a pioneer in Industrial Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Gebhard pre-deceased her in 1969. A gracious hostess who was active in the community until the past year, she was a member of the Austin Womens Club, the Austin Club, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, the First Presbyterian Church, and the Alumnae Association of the University of Wisconsin. She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Gebhard Gardner (Mrs. W.B. Gardner Jr.); granddaughters Sharon Clare Gardner of Austin and Melanie Gardner Seat, and husband Brandon Seat, of Palestine, Texas; great-grandsons, Austin Gardner Seat and Aidan Thomas Seat. A special thanks to Comfort Keepers of Austin, the staff of the Retirement Center of Austin and long time housekeeper Hortense Alvariz.
