Erin Melissa Materanek Erin Melissa Materanek, age 50, died on November 23, 2003 after having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer four years prior. Erin was born on December 11, 1952, in Victoria, Texas, to her parents Jean and Jim McCord. Erin grew up in Victoria, attending school there and graduating from Victoria High School in 1970. She attended Trinity University in San Antonio for her first two years of college and then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin in 1975, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with concentration in French and History. On October 1, 1977, Erin married Roy W. Materanek, her high school and college sweetheart and life-long love. They shared thirty-four beautiful years together, twenty-six as husband and wife. In July 1979, Erin and Roy joined forces to establish RWM Design, where Erin was office manager and so much more. Roy affectionately called her the Boss. She was a driving force in the business and enabled Roy to focus on interior design. Erin loved to travel and would be ready to go at the drop of the hat, even if she did not know the destination. Erin very much enjoyed her many friends, playing bridge, drama, reading, playing with her cats Pushkin, Bovard, and Gerlie. She enjoyed going for walks and picnics in the country. Erin loved people and life. She spoke French and Spanish fluently, which served her and Roy well on their travels. Before responsibilities of RWM Design occupied most of her professional life, Erin volunteered in several organizations. These included the Junior League of Austin, the Austin Junior Womans Club, and the Laguna Gloria Art Museum. She was president of the Heritage Society of Austin and a member of the Heritage Society Board. Erin also volunteered at the Pioneer Farm where she worked with children. She served as parliamentarian on the Zachary Scott Theatre Center Board. Erin was preceded in death by her mother, Jean Shibley McCord, her sister Karen McCord Fraile, her aunts Erin McCord Guittard and Lillian Shibley Peterson, and her cousin Lawrence Edwin Peterson, Jr. Erin is survived by her husband, Roy W. Materanek; her father, James Ebenezer McCord of Victoria, Texas; and her sister, Marion Bovard McCord of Glen Gardner, New Jersey. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Pedro Fraile Balbin of Madrid, Spain; two nieces Lucia Fraile McCord and Elisa Fraile McCord who also reside in Spain; nephew Colin Patrick Martin of Glen Gardner, New Jersey, and two favorite cousins John Allen Peterson and Stephen Bovard Peterson. Erin and Roy shared a closeness in life and love that was everything. She was a person of wonderful spirit and caring. She had a bright mind and a wonderful sense of humor. When she smiled her eyes and face smiled as well. Erins honesty and warmth was most attractive and will not be forgotten. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3208 Exposition Blvd., with the Reverend William Clark officiating.
