Ernest is survived by his loving daughters, Selena (Gray) and Briana (Joseph), and his ex-wife, Leslie Cook, mother of his daughters. He also leaves behind three grandchildren—Easton, Aaron, and Wyatt—whom he adored. He is survived by his siblings: Matildy Jr. (Rosemary), Sally Marie (Thomas), John (Ophelia), Sarah (Lance), Terre (Juan), and Robert (Fatma). He was preceded in death by his father, Matildy V. Samaripa, and mother, Susie Samaripa.
Ernie had a great smile, loved to laugh, and had a hidden talent for drawing. He had a natural gift for sports—whether it was basketball, football, baseball, or anything that required athletic ability, he excelled. He was also an expert billiards player and passed on his love for the game to his youngest daughter, Briana. If he couldn’t be on the field or court, the next best thing was watching sports on TV. Everyone knew he was an unwavering fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns.
But beyond his love for sports, Ernie had a heart that was even bigger. He never met a stranger and was the kind of man who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need. His generosity knew no bounds—he was always willing to lend a hand, share a laugh, and make sure those around him felt welcomed and cared for. Family and friends would describe him as “fun-loving,” “kind-hearted,” and “a friend to all.”
Ernie grew up dancing disco and Tejano with his siblings and friends, spending weekends barbecuing and cherishing time with family. His love for dancing was a reflection of his joyful spirit, and we take comfort in knowing that he is now dancing with the Lord.
Though his passion for sports was great, the love he had for his daughters was unmatched. They were his everything. Selena took on the responsibility of caring for him in his later years, always seeking ways to improve his health. He knew how truly blessed he was to have them. His greatest joy in his later years came from his grandsons Easton, Aaron and Wyatt. He especially loved fishing with Easton and Aaron, treasuring every moment he spent with them. They were the sons he never had, and they brought immeasurable happiness into his life.
Ernie’s absence will be deeply felt, but his memory will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. His legacy of kindness, generosity, and love for his family will never be forgotten.
