Dr. Ernest “Glen” Glenwood Vorwerk, age 96, passed away on July 16, 2018, in Austin, Texas. He was born February 10, 1922, the eldest of two sons born to Ida Hees ad and Ernest Vorwerk at Wydermeier Hospital on 7th Street in Taylor, Texas. He grew up helping his folks and brother Edgar, who have all preceded him in death, on a cotton farm at Rice’s Crossing. He and his brother played at Brushy Creek and attended the Lutheran Church in Coupland, Texas where they were confirmed in German.
He attended Taylor Elementary and Austin High before graduating as Valedictorian from Pflugerville High School. Glen went on to get his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in Organizational Theory and Behavior at a later date.
Glen married Mary Louise Fouts when she was 18 and he was 19. With World War II going on, he decided to join the Army/Air Corps, and served for 25 years in the Air Force before retiring. He was a Navigator (Major) on the B-29 Super Fortress, serving in the South Pacific. He later returned to serve at Kelly AFB in San Antonio to work on C-119s.
Glen was a Mason; a member of Toastmasters International, including the local affiliate; an avid golf player; and reader and writer. He wrote two books, Now and Then and Living Life to the Fullest, with his wife, Linda. He started working at the US Postal Service in 1975 and worked his way up to SCF Manager/Postmaster in Austin, Texas, with 91 towns under his jurisdiction. He later became Postmaster of San Antonio in order to stifle the union aggression. From there he was sent to Washington, D.C. to teach Transcendental Meditation to the upper echelon. He retired in 1982 to return to Austin to build his home. He taught for ten years at Concordia University in Austin and served as Vice President Emeritus. He taught for two years at the local Le Tourneau University helping students obtain their Masters Degrees. He further taught for Concordia’s Lifetime Learning Program. He was also a member of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Linda B. Vorwerk; stepson Nathan VandenAvond and husband Benny VandenAvond; daughter Gail and husband Al Casarez and their children, Amanda, Hannah, and Call; daughter Marianne and husband Mike Gordy and their children, Andrew and his wife, and Jacob; daughter Carol and husband Clifford Rankin, and her son Joseph Tawney and his husband; and nephew Kelly Vorwerk; as well as numerous cousins and a host of other family and friends.
A Memorial Service honoring Glen will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 23, 2018, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
