Ernest was born on February 27, 1942, in Alice, Texas, to parents Christel Diaz Herrera and Andrea Ybarra Herrera.
After graduating from High School he enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War. After his military service he returned to his hometown and was married to Elena Herrera.
He moved to Austin and started a successful business in 1974 called Atlas Spring Service and retired in 2015, leaving the business to his two sons to run.
He was deeply in involved in car restoration and enjoyed spending his time at his property in Del Valle, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christel and Andrea Herrera; his wife, Elena V. Herrera; his brother and sister, Homero Herrera and Cecilia Ramos.
He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Robert E. and Sandy Rangel, Mario A. and Barbra Rangel; his grandson, Jason R . Rangel, his wife Jackie; his granddaughter, Kelsey M. Rangel; and four great grandchildren, Autumn Elizabeth, Dakota Elena, Aria Rose and Ridge Solomn; sisters, Rebecca Gonzalez (Mauricio) and Amelia Smithwick (David M.); and brothers, Christel Herrera (Isabella), and Mario A. Herrera.
