Eugene was a graduate of West Point Military Academy, Class of 1963. His radio call sign was “Rough Rider 6,” and his fiercest loyalty was to his country and the U.S. Army. Eugene Cargile served in the Army for 24 years in various assignments to include the 82nd Airborne Division, MACV Vietnam, the 1st Cavalry Division (twice), the Pentagon, and the 8th Infantry Division, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Honored for his bravery and leadership, Eugene received multiple awards and decorations including: Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal with Device, Air Medal (OLC), Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), Bronze Star Medal (Valor), Purple Heart (OLC), and Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC).
Eugene’s exemplary service as an Infantry Battalion Commander resulted in acts of a warrior’s bravery that distinguished him among his peers as a strong, compassionate military leader. Eugene also served effectively as the Deputy Executive Director to the Adjutant General of Texas.
A husband, father, patriot, and a lion. Eugene was a man of faith and action. His greatest joy was his wife, Eddie-Carol, his 5 children, 17 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way. His proudest moments were his children’s and grandchildren’s births, graduations, and marriages; and the arrival of his great-grandchildren. He was actively involved in the Lago Vista Lions Club, the Lago Vista Volunteers, the Disabled American Veterans, the 5th Battalion 7th Cavalry Association. His dedicated service to his community, exemplified in his participation with the Lions Club, was a reflection of the life of Jesus, the Lion of Judah.
His body will be laid to rest on Wednesday, September 1st, at 10:00 AM in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family at the church from 12:30-1:30 PM.
A celebration of life will take place at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, September 1st, at Glad Tidings North Assembly of God Church in Leander, Texas. Memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Charity, the Lago Vista Volunteers, Inc., or any ministry to which you feel led.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Eddie-Carol Cargile, a son Mike Cargile (Nan) of California, Kysa George (Kenny) of Virginia, Kelly Mathews (Jonathan) of New York, and Kenda Beebe of Texas. His 17 grandchildren children and 2 (soon to be 3) great-grandchildren are scattered across the nation but all call Lago Vista home.
