Gene was born to the late Edwin and Louise Urban in Fedor, TX on September 9, 1934. He spent his early years in the Fedor area and Austin, TX.
A graduate of Austin High (1953), Gene completed his Associates Degree of Accounting from Victoria College in 1956 and worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Gene and Lillian Joanne Greenwald fell in love at first sight and were married in 1956. They welcomed their sons Daniel Lee in 1957 and Douglas Ray in 1958. Gene and Joanne were faithful members of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and left a legacy of faith and family values to their children and grandchildren. After retiring from the Postal Service, Gene kept busy driving for ADESA…a retirement job that brought eighteen years of meaningful friendships and cherished memories.
Gene loved driving and restoring classic cars, scenic road trips, and camping with his favorite people. He was a passionate supporter of the Texas Longhorns and looked forward to football season every year. He dedicated his life to giving others joy; sometimes in the form of his famous smoked brisket or cinnamon rolls. Nothing brought Gene more happiness than spending time with his family.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Urban and Louise Drosche, and his brother, Wilbur. He is survived by his wife, Joanne, his sons Danny and Doug, his four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills on Monday, March 20th, from 5pm-7pm. Gene’s life will be celebrated at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Austin, at 1:00pm on Tuesday, March 21st. A graveside service will follow at Cedar Park Cemetery.
The family is grateful for your prayers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
