

March 9, 1927, in Bellville, Arkansas. She was the oldest of five children. Evelyn graduated
from Wheatley High in Boynton, Oklahoma, and attended the American Baptist Theological Seminary
in Nashville, Tennessee, and Oklahoma State University. She received a scholarship to Prairie View A&M University and later became a member of The O.S.U. Staff as a Food Nutritionist. She also served as President of the Nutritionists Federation of Black Women's Club in Oklahoma.
She was also a part-owner of a restaurant in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and head Chef. During her life, Evelyn loved gardening, cooking, and sewing for others. She was a loving, kind, compassionate person, and devoted to her husband and family. Evelyn was married to the late Madison Burkhalter, and they later moved to Round Rock, Texas, in August 1989. She had one son, Leon Cooper.
She was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge Number 50. Evelyn was a former member of the
Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church
Missionary Baptist Round Rock, Texas.
Evelyn loved the Lord and was currently a member of the Sweet Home Baptist Church in Round Rock,
Texas, where she remained faithful until her health failed. She served throughout the years as a Sunday
School teacher, Mission II Teacher, President of the General Mission, Deaconess, BTU Choister, She was
a member of the Usher Board, and President of the Choir.
She peacefully departed this life, transitioning from labor to reward, on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband and one and only son, Leon Cooper. One sister, Maggie Burton, three brothers, Jay Bee, Ray, and Chester.
She leaves to cherish in memory a granddaughter, Leandra Fay Cooper, whom she loved very much.
four step-children, Earnest and Vernon Burkhalter, Virginia Bell, and Florence Verdy, all of Austin, Texas, and a Nephew, Marvin Freeman of Oklahoma. Several nieces and nephews, one uncle, Charles Surratt of Bellville Arkansas, and a host of relatives and friends who became her family.
Evelyn left a great legacy that will live forever.
A visitation for Evelyn will be held Saturday, May 24, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Fuller Sheffield Funeral Services, 2808 E Martin Luther King Jr, Austin, TX 78702. A celebration of life will occur Saturday, May 24, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 2808 E Martin Luther King Jr, Austin, TX 78702. A commital will occur Saturday, May 24, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Hopewell Cemetery, 2810 Co Rd 285, Liberty Hill, TX 78642.
