Evelyn Owen Hereford
January 3, 1926 – May 15, 2019
Evelyn Owen Hereford was born in Highland Park, Dallas, Texas in 1926. After a brief move to Chicago, Illinois she moved to Depression-era Abilene, Texas with her mother and sister Nancy. This hardscrabble upbringing produced three tough, self-sufficient, opinionated women. A force to be reckoned with, she entered the University of Texas at age seventeen and graduated with a degree in sociology. In 1948, she married Dr Carl Hereford, a psychology professor at UT. While in Austin, they had a daughter, Lynn, and a son, Carl Jr.
In 1960, Carl decided to broaden the family's horizons, and he accepted a position teaching for two years at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. He loaded up the family's belongings in a 1958 Volkswagen Beetle, hitched it to a 1957 Chevy, and off they went. While he spent his days teaching, Evelyn was left with two small children and a baby on the way in a strange city of 3 million people (in 1961!) at 7,000 feet elevation, and she didn't yet speak Spanish. Somehow she made it all work. Their last child, David, was born there in 1962. The family was excited to head back to Austin after 2 years in Mexico, but Carl had other plans. Off the family went again, this time 4,000 miles south to Santiago, Chile, where Carl accepted a position at The University of Chile for two more years. Once again, with two children and a new baby, she made a wonderful life for the family in a strange city where she knew no one.
Upon returning to Austin, she began pursuing her own dreams as well as raising her family. She loved animals and was one of six founding members of the Austin Humane Society. In 1970, she became a Realtor and opened her own office in 1976. She had a long successful career, and took great pleasure in finding the perfect home for her many clients in Austin. After her marriage with Carl ended, she went on to marry Dr Fred Bullard, professor of geology, and then Dr Charles Cleland, professor of psychology, both of whom were faculty at UT.
True to her Depression-era sensibilities, she successfully wrung every drop of life out of her 94 years here on Earth and wasted nothing. She lived a life full of love for her family, education, the University of Texas, and her favorite city of Austin.
Evelyn is preceded in death by all of her beloved family except her son Carl Jr., who would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Westminster Manor for the care she received while there.
