Evie Lee Hays, age 93, of Austin, passed away Tuesday evening with her family at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.M. Hays; and her sons-in-law, Donald E. Glass and Fred Ruthven; and her canine companion, Sammy. Mother was born in Summerville, Georgia, March 15, 1914 to parents of Joe and Callie Headricks Floyd. At the age of 13, she was sent to live with relatives in Liberty Hill, Texas, after the passing of her mother. There she met our father, W.M. Hays. They later moved to Austin with their first born, Katie Hays Glass Ruthven, and with our grandparents, Walter and Tillie Tatum Hays. Eight years later, their second daughter, Betty Hays Mott was born. Mother worked for Austin Steam Laundry, Scarboroughs and then Texas Insurance Checking Office (now Insurance Council of Texas). You could always find Mother and Dad fishing on the coast at Goose Island, in Bastrop, or on the Turner Farm in Spicewood. They also enjoyed attending football games at Texas A & M, gardening, and hunting. They loved the outdoors. Mother loved working in the yard especially with her prized azaleas! She used to always tell us that people would stop and compliment her on its beauty. Later in years, you could find her walking her dog Buttons, not just in the yard, but the entire city block, stopping to visit with her friends in the neighborhood and at Goodwill Industries. This was a routine with her, at least twice each day, until March, 2007. She loved listening to Martys Colorado River Boys Blue Grass Band. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and a friend to many. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Evie is survived by her daughters, Katie Hays Glass Ruthven and Betty Hays Mott, both of Round Rock; grandson, Martin E. Glass and wife Ellen of Austin; granddaughter Sherelle and husband Dwayne Briggs of Round Rock; grandson Kevin Mott and wife Monica, of Humble; 13 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Jessie Ruth Brown and nephew Glenn Brown of Houston; many relatives; and a host of friends; and her Buttons. Honoring Mother as pallbearers are her great-grandsons, Travis Glass, Chris Arnold, Thomas Mott, Chris Moore, Heath Doyle, Jeremy Morrow, Jessie Shields, Justin Pfitzner and James Hays (cousin). Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Mott, Mark Gosney, Glenn Brown, and Johnny Hays. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am 11:00 am on Thursday, July 12 at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 am at Wilke-Clay-Fish Chapel with Dr. Gordon Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill Cemetery. The family extends their appreciation to Dr. William Woodward and the staff at Capital Medical Clinic; Dr. Fry and the staff at Hearthstone Care Center for the loving care given to Mother. Also, to our very special friends and neighbors; Allison and Mark Gosney, Julia Heskett, Angela Butterfield, and Sam Souhami and his mother, Sallie for the loving care and assistance given to Mother, her pets, and our family. We dont know what we would have done without all of you. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts.
