Florence Mae Young

Flossie was born March 26, 1941, in Selden, Kansas, to Dennis H. “Jim” and Laura Belle (née Hase) Corder. She graduated as valedictorian of Selden Rural High School and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in music education from Kansas Wesleyan University and her master’s degree in music education from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri.

While in Warrensburg pursuing that degree, Flossie met David Young. They were married on June 1, 1973, and shared their life together until his passing.

Music and teaching were at the heart of Flossie’s life. For 50 years, she taught piano in Warrensburg and Blue Springs, Missouri, and later in Austin, Texas. She was a longtime member of the Austin District Music Teachers Association (ADMTA) and shared her love of music with generations of students. Her lasting impact as a teacher was reflected in the students who grew up and later returned to Flossie with children of their own for piano lessons.

Her faith was also an important part of her life. Flossie was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where she directed the children’s choir and sang in the church choir.

Flossie possessed a natural grace and refinement, a memorable sense of humor, and a generous spirit. She loved her family deeply and was fiercely devoted to her sons. She will be remembered for her love of friends, students, music, and cats, and for the warmth she shared with everyone around her.

She is survived by her sons, Michael Young and his wife, Stephanie, and Jay Young; her brother, Michael Corder, and his wife, Sharon; as well as extended family, friends, students, and the many people whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Young, and her parents, Dennis H. “Jim” and Laura Belle Corder.
