Floydelle “Delle” June Howard Cummings of Wichita Falls and Austin, TX, passed away on August 21st, 2024, in Austin. Born to Floyd and Melanie Howard on May 30, 1928, Delle was the youngest of four children. Her life was one of full devotion to her children Terry, Jimmy, Mary and Charlie, and her grandchildren Trey, Paul and his wife Courtney, Crosby, Maddie, Jia, Lucy and Levi, as well as her great-grandchildren James and June.
Delle's life began in Ft. Worth, where she grew up with her siblings Irene, Margie and Max. Their simple home was filled with the laughter of Popeye cartoons and the smell of Mama Howard’s special “Mama Howard Cake” – chocolate cake with cinnamon. The backyard featured a beautiful pecan tree, a barrel of minnows for fishing and a detached single-car garage housing Daddy Howard’s 1958 Chevy.

After graduating from Northside High School in 1945, she pursued studies at TCU and a career as a secretary.
In January 1954, she married James Price Cummings and began raising Terry and Jimmy in Ft. Worth before relocating to Wichita Falls, where Mary and Charlie were born. She was a dutiful mother, baking individualized after-school cupcakes for each of her kids and carrying on the tradition of Mama Howard cake. Most days would find her behind the wheel of her station wagon – a model similar to that which was immortalized in National Lampoon’s Vacation - driving her kids to school, back from school, to practices and appointments, and doing it all over again the next day.
No remembrance of Delle is complete without mentioning her never-failing football fandom for the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Longhorns and the TCU Horned Frogs. Every Sunday afternoon of the 1970’s Cowboys heyday would find Delle leaning toward the TV and yelling, “Don’t hurt Roger!”
Delle is predeceased by her parents and siblings, and by her husband J. P. and her son Jimmy.
Services to celebrate Delle's life will be held on Saturday, August 24th, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Rd. in Austin.
Remembrances will be shared by Rev. Dr. Karen Greif and Rev. Dr. Charlie Cummings, with an invitation for participation by those in attendance.
Delle’s life was an example of love and devotion. Her children, grandchildren, family and friends celebrate the blessing her presence has been in our lives.
15 Precious in the sight of the LORD
is the death of his saints.
16 O LORD, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.
You have loosed my bonds. (Psalm 116:15-16, ESV)
