

Frances Marlene Harmon, 74, resident of Austin, Texas, passed away on Sept. 4, 2007, (after a long battle with dementia). Marlene was born September 18, 1932 in Gastonia, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Columbus and Essie Harmon. After graduating from Greensboro College, she served as a Methodist missionary in Leopoldville, the Belgian Congo, and at the Methodist Mission at the United Nations before receiving her Masters Degree in Psychology from Columbia University, New York. Marlene held the position of Dean of Women at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Other positions include director of Jester Center and staff psychologist and assistant director of the counseling center at the University of Texas. She retired from the University of Texas in 1992. Marlene enjoyed life to the fullest. A favorite hobby was exploring and studying the history, culture, topography and geography of Texas counties. She was an avid fan of the UT Ladies basketball and golf teams as well as the mens football teams. Marlene is survived by two brothers, Carroll Harmon of Birmingham, AL, Wade Harmon of Greenville, NC, and two sisters, Thelma Threatt of Gastonia, NC, and Mallie Riecken of Henderson, NV. She was loved by her nieces and nephews: Anna, Marlie, Christi , Debbie, Wendy, Terri, Mack, Mark, Juta, and Bill. She was supported and cared for at the end of her life by her dear friends, Dorothy Blume and Gaye Thompson.Her family and friends wish to express deepest gratitude to Dr. Mary Maxwell and her staff, the nurses, aides and staff at the Retirement and Nursing Center of Austin and the staff at Asera Care Hospice for the excellent care Marlene received.
