Frances Lyon was born in Konawa, Oklahoma in 1924. She came from a family of three brothers and two sisters, growing up in the Dustbowl during the Depression. Her family moved to New Mexico and Arizona—where ever there was work. Her childhood experiences instilled in her a strong sense of humility and appreciation for even the smallest of things. She grew up understanding that everyone in the family worked hard to make a better life for themselves. Her parents both died before she was 16, so Frances came to live with her older sister in Houston, Texas.
Frances met and married Jack Wetzel in Houston, September, 1942. They were stationed in Laredo during WWII. It was here that their daughter, Telia was born in 1944. After the war, they returned to Houston, where their son, Daryl, was born in 1952. During their time in Houston, Frances and Jack created and maintained a stable and loving environment for their family. They retired to the Texas Hill Country near Spicewood, Texas, in 1980.
Known to many in her family as Granny, Frances had a caring, open heart, willing to help anyone. She always greeted people with a smile and filled her days with laughter. She was elegant but did not bring attention to herself. She loved nature—flowers and hummingbirds. She loved watching the sun set over the Pedernales River. Most of all, she loved her family and devoted her life to them.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband Jack.
She is survived by her son, Daryl (Dawn) Wetzel; daughter, Telia Mihills; grandsons, Michael Mihills and Wayne Mihills; granddaughters, Jordan Wetzel and Lana Wetzel; great-granddaughters, Erica and Bailey; and many nieces and nephews.
Special appreciation for the care of Frances and her family goes to the staff of Lakeway Regional Medical Center and Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital of Lakeway.
Visitation will held at 1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M., Friday, April 15, 2016, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, followed by Funeral Service at 2:00 P.M.
