

Frank grew up in San Angelo and graduated from San Angelo Central High School. He continued his education at the University of Texas before earning his doctorate in political science from Texas Tech University. Learning, teaching, and service defined his life’s work. He spent his entire professional career as a professor, ultimately serving as Dean of Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College, where he guided students and faculty with integrity, discipline, and an unwavering belief in the value of education.
Beyond the classroom, Frank believed deeply in community. He was an active member of Rotary and gave countless hours to youth sports, serving as President of Parkwood Little League in Houston. He was a member and leader at First Presbyterian Church of Uvalde.
Frank was a strong and determined man, known for his quick wit and steady resolve. When faced with adversity, he met it head-on. When diagnosed with throat cancer, he quit smoking immediately, a quiet but powerful reflection of the discipline and will that defined his life. He believed that if something mattered, it was worth doing completely.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Abbott, and his sister, Cynthia Keel. He is survived by his son, Frank P. (Lisa) Abbott of Frisco, Texas, and daughter Jennifer (Cris) Abbott-Banu of Cedar Creek, Texas, grandchildren, Ryan (Alexa) Abbott of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Natalie Abbott of Austin, Texas and Evelyn Banu of Portland, Oregon.
A memorial ceremony will be held on March 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas, 78752. The service will be open to the public.
Frank Winchester Abbott lived a life marked by purpose, intellect, and quiet strength. He will be remembered as a teacher, a leader, a father, a grandfather, and a man who meant what he said and stood by what he believed.
