Frank E. McLain was born in Amarillo, TX in 1937. As a child, he lost his father and was raised by Esther Sloan, his strong independent mother. She moved Frank and sister Jane Wagley to Dallas Texas in elementary school. Frank attended Highland Park High School and was an active Boy Scout who had the honor of meeting President Eisenhower. Frank went to the University of Texas at Austin for his undergraduate and law degrees. He was President of the Tejas Club, in ROTC, and was honored as a Silver Spur for outstanding leadership. He enjoyed sailing, tennis, handball, and classical music.
Frank was a Lieutenant in the Navy and served in the Jag Corp in San Francisco. Frank spent the majority of his legal career as a sole practitioner and had a soft spot for the underdog in litigation. He truly loved the law and worked tirelessly to serve others, always making himself available to clients and family alike to lend a helping hand. He also volunteered his expertise for 22 years on the board of the Tess P. White Foundation that supports numerous charities serving young people. His mindset can be summed up as "where there's a will, there's a way".
He and first wife Sharon Sue McLain Dockery were married and had two daughters, Ashley McLain and Sloan McLain of Austin. He is survived by these three women and his sister Jane Wagley and family, along with wife Lila McLain and stepdaughters Ashley Fricke and Heather Faulk. Additional family members include J.C., Corbin, and Beckett Schmeil; Thana McLain; Julian, Sam, and Ally Wait; Mark, Taylor, Brayden, Hannah Faulk; and Trace Turner. He is remembered as a vivacious, strong-willed, curious, creative, playful, intelligent, entrepreneurial, lover of knowledge, art, big trees, and surprises.
A celebration of life for Frank will be held Friday, June 24, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Weed-Corley-Fish South Chapel, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704.
