Gary David Dreyer, age 58, died Monday, August 30, 2010, while on a hunting adventure near Kuujjuaq, Canada. Gary grew up in Port Aransas, Texas, the son of Lloyd A. Dreyer and Eula Mae Dreyer. It was there that he developed a love for fishing and hunting that would follow him all of his life, and he was very fortunate to be trained by the best, his father, a highly respected and well-known fisherman and boat captain. Gary achieved his 100 ton U.S. Coast Guard license in 1977. In his early years he enjoyed a career as a boat captain, providing him many occasions of sport fishing, tournaments and traveling. In the mid-eighties he moved to Austin and went to work as a travel agent at Four Seasons Travel, meeting many people, some of whom remained close friends. Gary went to work for the State of Texas, Office of the Attorney General, in 2006, in the travel and accounting division. Again, he very much enjoyed the people he met and worked with there. Gary made friends easily and was always interested in other people, their lives and experiences. Gary did not let a diagnosis of heart disease keep him from traveling, and he indulged his passion for exploring, fishing and hunting whenever possible. He was always planning the next far-flung adventure, and was often accompanied on these trips by the love of his life, Frederica Dreyer, who shared his passion for the outdoors and fly-fishing. Gary’s motto was “Have fly, will travel”.
Gary is survived by his parents, Lloyd and Eula Mae Dreyer of Port Aransas; Frederica Dreyer of Austin; two daughters; Jo An Taylor of Lakeway, and Carolyn Long and son-in-law Brian Long of Spicewood; as well as four grandchildren; Zachary Thomas, Caleb Thomas, Caden Long, Isabella Taylor, and one great-granddaughter; Lyllian Thomas. He is also survived by brother; Richard Allen Dreyer, sister-in-law; Kathy Dreyer, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by infant brother, Ralph S. Dreyer, and his younger brother, Lloyd J. Dreyer (Jody), who shared his love of hunting, and was Gary’s best friend. Family gatherings brought Gary much joy in his last years.
The family is grateful to Dr. Edward Chafizadeh, and staff, and Dr. J. Eric Lambeth for their kind care of Gary as he struggled to have a fun life, even with heart disease.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 8th, at 11:00 am at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar in Austin, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Texas Parks and Wildlife, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, Texas 78744.
