Gary Gene Preuss

Born and raised in El Campo, Gary demonstrated academic excellence from an early age. His lifelong pursuit of knowledge led him to earn a bachelor's degree from Rice University, a master's degree from Georgetown University, and a Ph.D. from the American Institute of Holistic Theology. His inquisitive mind and passion for learning remained with him throughout his life.

Gary devoted more than 30 years of service to the Texas State Comptroller's Office, where he worked as an economist. His professional career reflected his commitment to public service, thoughtful analysis, and helping others through his work.

Gary was an adventurous traveler who loved exploring the world. Among his most meaningful journeys were visits to his ancestral homelands of Germany and the Czech Republic, where he connected with his family's roots. Whether traveling abroad or closer to home, Gary always preferred the scenic route, appreciating the beauty along the way.

A gifted writer, musician, and lifelong learner, Gary was the author of Science Whispering Spirit and had a deep appreciation for spirituality, nature, and the outdoors. In retirement, he continued to pursue these passions, sharing them generously with others. He sang and played piano for many years at church, appeared in several theatrical productions, and worked as a professional tour guide at the Texas State Capitol and throughout Austin, where his enthusiasm, knowledge, and gift for storytelling enriched the experiences of countless visitors.

Gary was also a devoted pet parent to two beloved dachshunds, who brought him years of companionship and joy.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. Preuss Jr. and Emma Gerla Preuss, and by his brother, Charles W. Preuss III.

A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at St Peter Apostle Church, 4600 E Ben White Blvd, Austin, TX 78741, US, on July 30, 2026, from 10:30 am to 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
