He was born 16 July 1939 in Shiloh, Limestone Co. Texas to A.A. 'Pete' Richardson and Henrietta 'Mary' Hines Richardson. He attended schools in Fairfield, Waco and Austin, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from St. Edward's University in Austin
Gene was an avid sports fan, retired Texas banker of 48 years, retired National Guard of Texas, a member of Onion Creek Masonic Lodge. He was an historian of Texas, the lawmen of the Texas Rangers and the Civil War. He was a board member of Eanes ISD in 1969-70 when Westlake High School was founded and was very proud of their accomplishment.
But most of all Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Even when so very ill with cancer he attended every football and baseball game that his grandsons played - recitals for his granddaughter - almost up until the end - until his body could go no further. He treasured and loved his family...he put them first in his life.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Zelma; his three children and their families, Larry Richardson and wife Ora; Randall Richardson and wife Heather, their sons Hunter and Garrett; Julie and husband Jeff Hodges and their children Joshua and Jordan; his sister, Katy Richardson Francen and husband Raymond. Also included are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
He is also survived by his dogs and cats that provided unwavering love and comfort during this difficult time. They shared a special bond, and it was these little pets that helped him understand how important pets are in the lives of people. Missing him are his dogs, Daphne Moon, and Annabelle; his three cats, Bill Bob, Ms. Kitty and Baby.
The family would like to say thank you to Gene's family doctor, Dr. Faith Holmes (and staff) and Lighthouse Hospice for their thoughtful and compassionate care.
Those of us who knew Gene were very fortunate - he was an outgoing, generous, loving man who will be greatly missed by all of us.
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want to rites in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little-but not too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me-but let me go
For this is a journey that we all must take
And each must go alone.
It's all part of the Master's plan
A step on the road to home
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me but let me go.
Happy Trails, Gene!!!
