George Walter Field, 88, of Austin, Texas passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 19, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. George was born on December 22, 1927 to Jesse Field and Edith Littrell Field in the San Antonio area and grew up in Thrall, Texas where he enjoyed athletics and playing music. He starred in football and basketball for his beloved Thrall High School Tigers, often joking that they were too poor to afford a basketball goal and thus could only play defense.
George’s humor was matched by his integrity and love for his country culminating in an honorable stint in the Armed Forces. He was awarded Army of Occupation and World War II Victory medals before his honorable discharge and remained committed to serving his country as an active and proud VFW member and Commander. After the service, George began a distinguished career of over 40 years with Southwestern Bell.
He married Kathlyn Knopp in 1953 and began raising three children he lovingly called “Laurie B Beth”, “Dee Dee Girl” and “Charles the Once.” After the death of his wife, George eventually found happiness again with Iris Chevalier. They remained committed to each other for the rest of George’s life…over 50 years.
George’s hobbies included hunting, sports, watching his beloved Longhorns and playing golf as well as working the “Ponderosa” …his 25-acre ranch near Pedernales Falls. He took great pleasure in watching his grandkids…Ashley, Graham, Darcy, Lauren and Matt grow up and life got even better with the arrival of, so far, four great-grandchildren…Lelani, Lilly, Landon and Sawyer. He was very happy to hear that there would be another great-grandchild born this fall.
Late in life, George returned to his love of music, playing guitar in a band of seniors that performed at nursing homes and rehab facilities. He also enjoyed his weekly coffee and breakfast outings with his telephone buddies, like Jim Niven, who so graciously took him to and from events. George was a complex individual…tough as nails, yet the sweetest, most generous friend or family member a person was fortunate enough to know.
He is survived by his loving wife, Iris Chevalier Field; son, Chuck Field; daughters, Laura Gault and husband, Mark and Diane Williams and husband, Tim; five grandchildren; four great-grandThe family will receive friends from Noon to 1:00 P.M., Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with a Celebration of George’s Life to follow at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel with Pastor Jeanne Devine officiating.
