

George was born at home on October 7, 1939 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he grew up.
He graduated from Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia. He attended and graduated from St. Josephs University, also in Philadelphia, where he went to night school and earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
In 1959, George met Mary. They dated while he joined the United States Army Corps in 1961, from which he was Honorably Discharged in 1967.
George and Mary fell in love and married in June 1964. They were ready to celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary this month.
George worked for Rohm and Haas as a Chemist in the Research Lab in Springhouse, Pennsylvania. In 1977, he was transferred to Deer Park, Texas, as the Senior Purchasing Manager. He retired in December 2002 from Rohm and Haas after 40 years of service.
In 2003, George and his wife Mary moved to Austin, Texas. He was very active with St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, where he was involved in the Knights of Columbus, PrimeTimers, and served as an Usher. He enjoyed watching and playing sports. He was in the Austin Senior Softball League. He especially loved watching baseball and football. He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Texas A&M Aggies.
He is preceded in death by his siblings Mary McGowan Scarlett, Kathleen M Warner, Tom McGowan and Mike McGowan.
George is survived by his wife Mary Ellen McGowan, brother Fred McGowan, sons Michael McGowan and Joseph McGowan and their spouses Margaret McGowan and Sandra McGowan. PopPop was an adored grandfather to Madeline McGowan, Matthew McGowan, Marissa McGowan, Yesenia Duran, and Julie Duran.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 9:00am, with the Recitation of The Holy Rosary at 9:30am, and a Mass of Christian Burial immediately following at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 4800 Convict Hill Rd, Austin, TX 78749. A graveside service will be held at 11:30am in Cook Walden Forest Oaks Memorial Park, 6300 W William Cannon Dr., Austin, Texas 787490. A reception will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church on the 2nd floor of the Parish Hall at 12:30 PM.
