Born in Detroit, Michigan on June 11, 1922, George was the child of Chester A. McMartin and Carol A. McMartin. Attending school in Detroit, George spent his summers in Port Huron, Michigan a town along the shores of Lake Huron. In a visit to Port Huron just before his 99th birthday, George relived his childhood memories of swimming near the Blue Water Bridge, took a ride on a pilot boat near the bridge, and once again put his toes in the sand along Lake Huron. “It’s a wonderful place,” he said to the Mayor of Port Huron. “It’s home.”
After leaving his home to attend Duke University, George was drafted into Army in 1942. He served until 1951 when he left the Army to complete college. During his initial military service he completed Officer candidate school. He rejoined the military in 1958 and served until he retired in 1978 having served his country for 35 years. During his time of service he was posted on multiple overseas and numerous United States assignments.
He then worked for the Texas Department of State Health Services for 10 years. After his second retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends in Austin, Texas. Retirement meant that he finally had time to pursue his passion for baseball. He could often be found in the bleachers during baseball spring training in Florida.
George was a graduate of Duke University and Baylor University.
George is survived by his loving wife Cheryle of 76 years; daughters Pam and Pat, son Cam; grandchildren Jennifer, David, Kim, and Chris; as well as his great grandchildren James, Emmy, Charlie, and Jack.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Nancy.
George will always be remembered for his ever-present smile, his lifelong dedication of service to his country, his unbounded love of his wife and family, and certainly not least, being a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers baseball team.
Another member of America’s Greatest Generation has left us.
