George Ellison Morgan, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the age of 92. Born in Austin on May 23, 1923, to Janie and George Morgan, George was married to Antonia "Toney" Veselka in September 1942, and remained at her side for over 70 years, until she predeceased him in 2013.
A proud life-long resident of Austin, especially South Austin, George spent almost 50 years with the company then known as Southwestern Bell. He was especially proud of his service with Local 6132 of the Communication Workers of America. After his retirement, when he was not fishing with grandchildren, he made himself available to family and friends for every type of project, large or small. His devotion to his neighborhood community resulted in his being called the "Mayor of Lindell Street." With Toney, he attended St. Ignatius Martyr Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
George leaves behind a family he loved, and who will miss him very much: daughters Claudia Morgan and husband Tom Biddle, of Brooklyn and Houston, and Carole O'Connell and husband Mike of Fort Worth; sons David Morgan and wife Sharon, and Daryl Morgan and wife Andrea, all of Austin; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family is very grateful to Mario at Kind Heart Home for caring for our beloved George with such great respect and devotion during the last year of his life.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Monday, January 18, with visitation beginning at 6 pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 19 at St. Ignatius Martyr Church with Reverend Mike D. Couhig, C.S.C. officiating. Interment will follow at Boggy Creek Cemetery. Memorials in George's honor may be sent to St. Ignatius Martyr Church or to the charity of your choosing.
