Gerald Nelson Powers

Gerald Nelson Powers, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend died peacefully on February 18, 2023, just two days shy of his 77th birthday following a 12-year battle with cancer. Gerry was born to Marjory Nelson Powers and Clark Newsom Powers in Guelph, Ontario Canada on February 20th, 1946. He attended Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton, Alberta and graduated from the University of Denver (DU) in 1969 as a four-year scholarship athlete. At DU, Gerry met his wife Cindy Fowler and excelled in Men’s Ice Hockey, winning back-to-back National Championships in 1968 and 1969 as the starting Goaltender and was named finals MVP in ’68 and first team all-star in ‘69. Sadly, Cindy passed away from her own battle with cancer in 1983 and Gerry moved to her hometown of New Orleans in 1988. Over time, Gerry returned to his beloved Denver working in real estate and remaining highly active with the Denver Pioneer hockey squad. Upon his retirement, Gerry migrated to a much warmer climate in Georgetown, Texas.

Gerry leaves behind his daughter, Melissa Powers McPhail of Charlotte, NC, and son Courtney Fowler Powers, of Austin, TX. He also leaves four grandchildren, Josie McPhail (13), Margaret Powers (10), Luke Powers (6) and Gretchen Powers (5) and was affectionately known as “G-Pa”. Gerry was the eldest of three brothers and leaves behind Donald Powers (Louise) and Bruce Powers (Ann Marie) as well as his sisters-in-law Elizabeth Fowler and Cristine Hearne and brother-in-law Hardy Fowler Jr. (Ellie). Gerry is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in both Canada and the United States.

The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of M.D. Anderson who, through their attention and skill, were able to provide world-class care that gave Gerry the tools necessary to fight bravely for 12 years.
