Geraldine Annette Green-Reed, born on March 10, 1952, in Washington, D.C., entered this world as a fighter and left it the same way on May 18, 2025. The beloved daughter of the late Gerald D. Green Sr. and Ruby L. Green, Geraldine arrived prematurely at just 2 pounds and 1 ounce. After spending four months in the NICU, she began her journey toward becoming the powerful, nurturing presence so many would come to know and love.
Geraldine was educated in the D.C. Public Schools System and graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School. She later attended Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University in Tallahassee, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1981. Teaching was her calling—a passion rooted in her desire to uplift and empower others, particularly the youth of her hometown.
Geraldine dedicated nearly three decades of service to D.C. Public Schools, shaping lives at Aiton Elementary, Evans Junior High, Kelly Miller Junior High, Ballou Senior High, and Anacostia Senior High. Whether known as “Mrs. Green-Reed” or affectionately as “Ma,” she left a lasting impact on generations of students, many of whom remained in her life long after the classroom.
In 1985, Geraldine married Robert Reed, and in 1987, they welcomed their beloved son, Gerald. Known to family as “Butch,” he was the light of her life. As a devoted single mother, Geraldine often reminded him, “It’s you and me against the world”—a phrase that remained their bond until her final days.
After retiring from full-time teaching in 2010, Geraldine continued to substitute teach and she deepened her spiritual journey. In 2022, she proudly earned her Master of Theology from Andersonville Theological Seminary, a testament to her belief that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald D. Green, Sr.; her mother, Ruby L. Bishop; her sister, Elaine C. Green; and her brother, Gerald D. Green, Jr.
Geraldine will be remembered for her sharp intellect, compassionate heart, love of deep conversation, and unwavering faith. She is survived by her cherished son Gerald (Nikia); her treasured grandsons Christopher, William, Carter, and King; and her beloved granddaughters Jaziah and Paige. She also leaves behind her bonus son Robert and bonus daughter Pamela (Ciara), as well as their children.
Her legacy continues through the many former students who affectionately called her “Ma,” including Angelique, Tania, Felicia, Devette, Pooh Bear, Mekia, Gene, and countless others. Geraldine’s spirit lives on in the many relatives, cousins, friends, and lives she touched along the way. She loved deeply, gave generously, and lived with purpose. She will be missed beyond measure and remembered always.
