Gerry Van King was born on February 22, 1954, in Austin, Texas. His mother was Mrs. Bobbie Clark Washington, and his father was Mr. Marcellus McWilliams. Gerry attended school in the Austin Independent School District. He also served in the U.S. Army. Gerry was a self-taught musician. He played the Bass Guitar and various African musical instruments. Gerry is known as the King of Sixth Street in Austin, Tx. He played for many years as a street musician. He also played at churches and at schools. Gerry would always play and sing for family and friends at family gatherings and birthday parties.
Gerry is survived by his son, Marcellus McWilliams; granddaughter, Destiny McWilliams; grandson, Zion McWilliams; and two great-grandsons, Dinero Sheffield and Di’Mari Sheffield. He is survived by his bonus daughter, Ebony Fuller, and his bonus son, Asante Fuller Sanborne. Gerry is also survived by his brothers, Reginald Carter, Ricky King, and Kenneth King. Gerry is survived by his sisters, Linda Lee, Celestine (William) Allen, and Terrie (Roy) McCarthur. There is also a large host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
