Gil served in the Navy during World War II from June 1944 to June 1946, ending his military career in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He then moved to St. Louis, Missouri and attended St. Louis University where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in accounting. It was in St. Louis that he met and fell in love with his wife Christina and they married on September 3, 1949 in Christina's hometown of Glennonville, Missouri. They later moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where they adopted their four older children. In search of warmer weather they decided to make their home in Austin, TX in 1963.
Gil was a C.P.A in Austin and worked for Ernst and Ernst before joining a private C.P.A firm where he was co-partner for over 30 years. In 1998 they adopted two of their grandchildren, which they raised from infancy.
Gil was a devout Roman Catholic who followed his faith in every aspect of his life. Over the years he and his wife have been members of St. Mary Cathedral, St. Ignatius Martyr and St. Peter's Church. He served multiple ministries including: The Knights of Columbus, Serra Club (which promotes vocations to the ministerial priesthood and vowed religious life), Legion of Mary, and he and his wife cared for over 30 foster babies in their home through the Home of the Holy Infancy.
Gil was the second youngest of four children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Callie Nowacki. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Christina V. Nowacki; daughters, Marcia Giovinco, Christina M. and Marie Nowacki; sons, Matthew and wife Emily, Martin and Mark; granddaughter, Tara and husband Eric Polonski; great-granddaughter, Sascha Polonski; as well as his sister, Junella (Nellie) Wieter; and brothers, Carl of St. Louis, Missouri, and Ray and Rosemarie of Breese, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Central Texas in Gil's name, 1625 Rutherford Lane, Austin, Texas, 78754.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Avenue. Funeral Service 10:00 am Monday, December 31, 2012 at Assumption Mausoleum Chapel.
