Gladys Harris, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away on Tuesday, October 26th, 2010. Gladys was born on August 30th, 1921 in Smithville, Tennessee to Claude Martin Hardcastle and Hassie Alice Hardcastle.
She graduated from East Nashville High School and worked at Thayer General Hospital, National Life Insurance Company, and Fort Campbell Kentucky as a medical secretary. She had a lifelong interest in holistic health and wellness, and became very accomplished and learned in this field.
Gladys was a kind and loving mother and grandmother, tender, gentle and accepting toward everyone; quick to see the good in people of all ages. She had a natural ability to compliment people in an encouraging way. She was constantly curious and interested in what people had to say; always cheerful and optimistic, and we were often warmed by her unique sense of humor. It is fitting that her middle name was Jewell; throughout her life her spirit sparkled softly, like a precious gem.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Lucas Harris; and her sister, Ruth Robinson.
She is survived by three children; Katherine Harris, Jane Hill and her husband Glenn, and John Harris; eleven grandchildren; Amy Hauck, Mandy Harris, Anna Harris, Logan Hill, Nathan Hill, Natalie Hill, Nicholas Harris, Ian Harris, Katie Harris, Jamie Campbell, and Joel Campbell; two great-grandchildren; Piper Camarillo and Haven Hauck; sisters Bobbie Jean Hallowes and Hazel Miles; and many nephews and nieces.
Special thanks are extended to Angel Heart Hospice and the loving staff at Carestone Assisted Living, who called her “our little sunshine.”
A private family funeral will be held Saturday, October 30th at Cook-Walden/ Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Oak Hill.
