Glenn Wayne Shankle passed away on May 3rd, with his daughter at his side, at the age of 71. He was born and raised in Austin, Texas where he attended the original L.C. Anderson High School and went on to take classes at St. Edwards University.
Glenn embarked on a 30+ year public service career beginning at the Comptroller of Public Accounts where he worked for his mentor and friend, the late legendary Bob Bullock. In 1991 he followed Bullock to the Texas Legislature where he became the Director of Personnel with the Texas Senate. In 1995 he moved to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality where he eventually served as Executive Director from 2004 to 2008. He continued to be involved in environmental regulation as a consultant following his departure from the state.
Glenn was well known around town and could hardly walk into an Austin establishment without running into a friend. He began riding motorcycles in his mid-life and enjoyed many road trips including several to Sturgis, South Dakota. He was a collector and amassed impressive collections of guns, watches, Harley Davidson gear, motorcycles, and cars. In the last decade of his life, he obtained his pilot’s license and flew his own plane. But his favorite activity was to spend time at his getaway in Bastrop, Texas which he jokingly called “Rockridge.”
Glenn talked nonstop about his family, especially his daughter Alexis and his new grandson, Nico. He is predeceased by his parents Theothus Shankle and Elsie Wilson and his first wife Barbara Shankle. He is survived by his children Alexis, Bruce, and David, as well as grandchildren, Darryon and Daxton Shankle. He enjoyed attending periodic family reunion events with dozens of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service for Glenn will be held Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 10:00 AM with a reception to follow at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, TX 78731.
