Born on February 13, 1957, in Manchester New Hampshire, to Maurice and Jeanette (Matthews) Kuchar. He was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and the family he came from.
He graduated from Watertown high school in 1975 before attending Stetson University where he met his beloved wife of 46 years, Mary Boyer Hunter. As a freshman, he had the guts to ask a senior out to “go dancing” and the rest was history. He and Mary were inseparable and lived to have fun in all aspects of life. They often played frisbee on the beach, danced to the greatest 70’s music and shared a dear love for their golden retrievers. In 1975, on the way home to New England during Christmas break, Gregg felt the need to stop and use a payphone to ask Mary to marry him.
The two married in 1979 in Asheville, NC where Gregg’s career began in the insurance business. He opened Kuchar Tax Planning and Investment Services where he and Mary truly made the ideal team - in and out of the office. He proudly would advertise his services with just a picture of his three dogs and his legendary slogan, “For a better Future, talk to Kuchar.”
In 1982, he and Mary soon started a family of three girls – Ginny Blaylock, Catherine Moats and Molly Roberts.
Gregg was the ultimate Girl Dad and proud of it. He often would tell people he “was a rich man” only because of his family. He was the Dad that volunteered to Coach, play neighborhood hide & go seek, backyard soccer, take a carload of kids to go camping, read to elementary classrooms and lead bible school on Sunday mornings. He stayed busy playing every game under the sun with his girls because he was a total athlete and true competitor.
His favorite teammate was his older brother Peter Kuchar where they would battle for hours on any court, course or table they could find. Gregg was known for his crafty game of “speed golf” where he gifted himself endless mulligans. He was a force to be reckon with on the ping pong table and tennis courts. Although, the best of Gregg was not his athletic abilities, but his epic one-liners that came out during competitions. He often would kill his opponents with humorous smack talk, rather than cussing he would shout “dog meat!” or “buzz off greaseball!” to show his goofy, prankster side.
He found joy mainly in his family, faith, dogs, music and games. He was 100% heart in everything he put himself towards. He regularly would wake up early to read his bible, followed by 5 miles before eating breakfast with his girls and heading into work. He mainly spent time in the kitchen cooking Ukrainian dishes and dancing to Earth Wind & Fire. He was a man of service through the Western North Carolina Rescue Mission where he discipled dozens of men on a weekly basis. He was a Godfearing man and always eager to share his faith.
In 2015, Gregg was diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia where he began his greatest fight, remarkably without ever a complaint. In 2018, he and Mary relocated to Ausitn, TX. He quickly became an avid Longhorn fan and never missed a game watch, and sometimes even another rerun. His time in Austin allowed him to slow down and be with his family. He and Mary embodied the greatest example of unconditional love through their love story, through sickness and health.
Gregg is survived by wife, Mary; daughter Ginny Blaylock and daughters Blaykelyn and Camryn; daughter Catherine Moats, and husband, Brian, and their children, Claire and Colin; daughter Molly Roberts, and husband, Justin, and their children, Hunter Ann and Haley; his mother, Jeannette Kuchar, brother Mark Kuchar and sister, Nancy Kuchar.
A Celebration of Life will be Friday, May 15th at Good Shepard Episcopal Church at 11am.
