After graduating from Waco High School in May, 1951 he attended Tarleton University before joining the United States Army. It was while serving in Philadelphia Pennsylvania during the Korean Conflict that he met his wife Dorothy Anne Cotshott. They were married on April 7, 1956.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol L. and Noble E. Walker, his son and daughter-in-law, Kip L. and Cathy Cannon, and grandchildren, Brittany M. Walker, Jeremy N. Walker, Tyler Cannon, Kolby Cannon and brother and sister-in-law Doyle L. and Mattie Cannon.
