
Helen Schultz Decherd 3/21/1907 - 5/11/2007 Helen Decherd, matriarch of the central Texas Decherd family died May 11, 2007, at the age of 100 years. She is predeceased by her husband, George M. Decherd, Jr. M.D., brother, William Schultz, sister, Blanche Schultz Larson, son James W. Decherd, M.D., and grandson, Jonathan Decherd, Jr. She is survived by sister, Evelyn Carpenter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sons, George M. Decherd IV, M.D. and Jonathan Decherd, Sr., M.D., and their spouses, Mary and Holly; grandchildren, James S. Decherd, David William Decherd, Michael Decherd, M.D. and his wife, Caroline, her late grandson's wife, Kim Decherd, Anne Marie Weekly and her spouse, Sean, George M. Decherd V, Caroline Decherd, Kendall Decherd, and Benjamin Decherd as well as numerous nieces, grandnieces, and ten great grandchildren. Helen met the love of her life, George M. Decherd, Jr., while attending the University of Minnesota. Her husband's medical academic career took them to New Orleans, Galveston and to Austin in 1947. After 17 years of marriage, he died of leukemia. She then enrolled at UT and earned a Master's Degree in Special Education and taught at the Texas School for the Deaf while putting three sons through medical school. After retiring from teaching, she obtained her realtors license and worked at Capitol Properties until the age of 80. She leaves a legacy of devotion to family, hard work, humor, and a practical and thrifty approach to life. She will he greatly missed by her family.
